When I was in college I got a random a call from this guy Matt- now typically it’s a rule of mine “don’t ever pick up a rando number- nothing good usually comes of it” but for whatever reason that day I did.
Hello?
Hi- is this Liz O’Day?
Yeh- who’s this? (I knew I shouldn’t have answered- I thought)
Hey, my name is Matt. I’m making a documentary and I’ve heard all about you and I’m wondering if you’d consider being part of it. We’re profiling/interviewing young Americans and asking them their hopes, dreams, and ambitions for themselves, their community, and America. Are you interested?
(is this a joke? Are my brothers behind this?) Um, sure…
A few weeks later, 4 guys showed up to follow me around the lab. They told me they were embarking on a journey across the country with the goal of shedding light on defining our generation. They met and more importantly listened to the stories of everyone from Zuckerburg to a drug dealer in NM and the whole experience has been beautifully crafted into a stunning documentary.
Matt, Matt, Adam and Ben (and everyone else) this film is amazing. I am beyond impressed. Major congrats to all of those involved.
What’s funny is after watching this I realized two things. 1. I’m a fidgeter and 2. This was shot nearly 5 years ago- and although in some ways my life has changed completely (I’ve lived in Europe, traveled to Asia, started my own fashion company, spoken at numerous events)- in some ways it’s exactly the same- I’m still in lab, I’m still searching for new ways to understand and get a one up on cancer…
Liz, How would you define our generation?
Hmm.. a generation of hope.
That was my answer then and it’s still my answer now. I urge you to watch this film. It’s a story of who we are, what we care about, and if as a generation we can even be defined…
Scott Brown, United States Senator "You have set a wonderful example of how people can pursue their passions while making a difference in the world. I wish you the best of luck on your creative endeavor and congratulate you for promoting science."
Lucy M, WST 2011 member "Liz, I'm in the Women of Science program and I was at your presentation yesterday. You are a great inspiration in my life and I'll be sure to think of you throughout my scientific career. I cannot tell you how great of an impact you've made on my life. If anyone's going to find a cure for cancer, I swear its going to be you. I can't stop talking about you and your story when I'm at home and with my friends. I took an SAT prep class at MIT today and I had to right an essay about nontraditional heroes. I started writing about books I've read and characters in them, but then I started to write about scientists like you. I think that I may have mentioned your name a couple of times :)Thanks for everything :)”
Marshall Thomas co-director of SITN. “Lizzard Fashion designed the advertising for our lecture series. It was a huge success, helping us to more than double our audience over previous years. Thanks Lizzard!!”
Joseph Sullivan, Mayor Braintree Massachusetts "I wanted to send along a note to tell you much I enjoyed the front page story about your terrific new venture. Going forward I wish you much success with Lizzard Fashion and please know that Braintree is very proud of you for the work you have done and the work you will continue to do."
Jill Hartman, Program Manager Boston College “Hi Liz. I can’t thank you enough for attending our event last week and being our keynote speaker. We greatly appreciate it, and I know the students did as well! It was wonderful to listen to you and your message was fantastic. I’m not sure if you saw the Heights article that came out last Thursday but it talks about your amazing speech.”
Lindsay Benson, North Carolina. "Lizzard! It's really great stuff! I actually made my parents feel my shirt last night, to show them how soft the material is. Now my mom & my boyfriend both want to order shirts, so I'm sure you'll be receiving another order from me soon."
