“Lizzy lizzard”- that’s the nickname Liz’s brothers, Rob and Chris, used to tease her with when she was younger. Now, a PhD student at Harvard University, Liz O’Day is studying the genes and pathways that lead to cancer initiation, progression and metastasis.
From an early age Liz has known what she has wanted to be, “I think I was in the 7th grade when I told my parents I wanted to be a biochemist– where I even heard that word I couldn’t tell you.” Wherever the idea came from it stuck- Liz is a scientist and she loves it. She studied biochemistry at Boston College, went on to pursue a Master’s degree in chemistry at the University of Cambridge in England and is now working on her doctorate at Harvard.
Despite having an amazing experience, Liz was frustrated with comments she didn’t fit the mold of a typical scientist. There is a misconception that the life of a scientist is somehow lackluster. Science is an adventure. Science is exciting. Science is cool. Science is sexy.
“I absolutely love what I do and I wanted to find a way to share my passion for science with a larger audience,” Liz has said, “and I love fashion (I may have a slight shoe problem)”.
As a result Lizzard Fashion was created. Lizzard is a eco-friendly company that promotes science through fashion. At Lizzard we offer fashion-forward clothing with a science twist. All apparel is eco-friendly and partial proceeds support scientific research.
