Most adult neurons (the cells that make up your brain) are unable to undergo cell division and as a result they cannot be replaced after being lost. Lizards, however, are an incredible creature that are able to regenerate nerve cells. In one experiment 95% of a lizard's neuron was destroyed-- but the lizard didn't die. In fact, the neuron grew back and the lizard was able to survive and even flourish.

Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) are transparent nematodes (roundworms) that are used extensively as model organisms in research. They are multicellular eukaryotic organisms (just like humans, sort of) that are cheap, easy to grow, and see-through-- meaning you can literally watch what happens during development.
Scientists have mapped out the exact fate of every single somatic cell and thus when things go awry (like what happens in disease) scientists can use C. elegans as a model to study what could be going down.
