He must have superpowers. I was 20 years old when I was selected to present my research in Germany at the Fruehjahrssymposium. It was my first international conference and Sir Jack Baldwin (the famed organic chemist) was presenting data on some biomimetic pathway he had figured out. I was awestruck. I was in Berlin for a little over a week. Not only did I get the opportunity to tour Germany’s rich history, I got the chance to exchange ideas with scientists throughout the world. Many of these people I am still friends with today. On the last day of the conference I mustered up the confidence to talk to Sir Baldwin himself. I told him about my project, and immediately he invited me to join him for breakfast and we both began drawing up chemical reactions on napkins. It was awesome.

Lizzard and scientists from all over the world celebrating at the Fruehjahrssymposium in Berlin, Germany
I’m incredibly grateful for this experience. Attending conferences and sharing ideas is a major component of being a scientist. When people come together and discuss their work, sparks fly. New ideas, new perspectives, new theories- it’s a major way science moves forward. Thus, I am beyond excited to announce the “Lizzard- Dare to Know Scholarship”, which will provide a travel scholarship for PhD students, college undergrads and exceptional high school students to attend the largest cancer conference in the world- the annual American Association for Cancer Research Conference.
Over the next few weeks we are finalizing the details and I urge you to sign up for our email list to stay up-to-date on the scholarship opportunities.
Lizzard, makes science fashionable.
